Its been a month since my United Kingdom trip and I have finally come to settling down and writing about my travel experience there. It's been quite an interesting and fulfilling trip since I travelled with my classmates (since it was a study trip). We were to travel to Preston, Manchester, Edinburgh and London.

Since there were 5 of us and each of us had our own preference for airline, we actually flew on separate airlines and only meeting at Heathrow, the more popular airlines being British Airways, Emirates and Qatar. 2 of my friends flew via Emirates since they were extending their trip after our study stint in UK, whilst another friend managed to secure a great deal with British Airways for a direct flight from SIN to LHR for only 1.3k and me on the other hand travelled with another friend of mine via Qatar.

Prior to flying we had to find our own flight there and lodging in our university's town of Preston, so as any typical traveller on a budget we turned to Airbnb for a place to stay (since there were 5 of us).

What we found apparently that suited our needs was a large loft/studio apartment near Central Preston, with it being shared amongst the 5 of us, we only had to pay about SGD35 each, pretty decent since we could cook and wash our clothes for the duration we were there.

Since both my friend and I flew by Qatar, we had to transit via Doha before reaching London.

Honestly, the transit area in Qatar was ridiculously long, we practically walked from 1 end to another to get to our gate so we walked about I guess 15 minutes even with the help of travellators.

The image above is Doha's famous giant teddy bear, I cant really understand what was the purpose of it other then filling up the space. Transit security was a pain in the neck with the long snaking queues and even though the security there seemed really slack (they weren't even looking at the screen when bags passed the X-Ray), it was still slow.

But nevertheless after another 7hour flight from Doha we finally reached Heathrow Terminal 4 around 6am, it's been a year since I've experience winter, living in sunny Singapore it really was relaxing to have cold winds around you. I practically walked around outside in just T-shirt and pants to enjoy the 1 degree temperature.

Heathrow Terminal 4

Some images from Heathrow, unfortunately it was not snowing despite the temperature, but I was sort of prepared since I spent a week in Korea with -7 degree temperature and now even a single drop of snow appeared.

Since it was a study trip, the school organised all our transportation, so we only had to settle our flight tickets and lodging in our main residing city.

The man above is our Korean professor, really appreciated his funny and ridiculous antics during the trip, he carried himself more like a student then a professor.

So here's the apartment we stayed in, and when we arrived it is quite true to it's picture. The host was kind enough to show us around the house and let us know of how we can go to buy groceries, since we reached our Airbnb around 5pm, quite a number of stores were closed, and our host was kind enough to give us a ride to a Tesco outlet in town to let us get some food.

We had to get to class the very next day and we were really jetlagged, since I was a light sleeper I got hit really bad, not sleeping for the 15 hour flight and the 5 hour bus ride to Preston and I practically stayed up for 10 hours during our first night in Preston.

So when we got to class we found out our first field trip was to travel to Grizdale park just on the outskirts of Preston. However, on our way there via bus, the driver apparently got lost and almost drove us to Scotland instead, what was supposed to be a 1 and 1/2 hour ride became a 4 hour nightmare.

So we had to make a pitstop somewhere to get lunch, and we arrived at an arthouse. It was quite an interesting place with awesome landscapes that you rarely get to see in Singapore.

Yes that's how tired my lecturer was.

But nevertheless we eventually reached Grizdale park and only managed to walk for about 1 hour, so its almost a full day ride with 1 hour of visiting. So I had nothing much to share about the place except these photos.

To be honest, Preston was a very quite and gloomy town, mainly since it was November and it rained practically everyday. There's not much to shop around and we just commute to school and back, for entertainment we just stayed in our apartment and watched shows on our laptops. Hoping the next part of our trip in Manchester would be more interesting.

We spent quite a number of days in Preston, but I shall not bore you with my school work so stay tuned for the Manchester part of the trip.
Day 1

Itinerary for the day:
Provence village
Little France
Mount Sorak Ski Resort

Day 1 Annyeonghaseyo Korea!

To reach Korea, we took a ride on Korean Air.The seats are comfy and i found the leg room okay. However, i got bored on the variety of the movies on the plane.

*PSST* the rumors are true. The air stewardess on board are SOOO pretty. They have the most luminous looking skin and their hair looks straight outta a salon. Word. I like their uniform. In my opinion, i find the uniform is so much better looking then Singapore airlines. Just find it classier.

After a 6 hours 30 min ride, we finally reached the land of beauty products. When we reached there the temperature was around -3/-6 degrees. Very cold for a Singaporean used to sunny Singapore.

I was peeved by the travelling agent. Why?

1. When we reached Korea, there was no agent there waiting with a signage. We were like left hanging looking for a person with a sign ( to show he/she was our tour leader). The lady was very late and when we had finally congregate and found her (we had to find her) we were missing a couple. I don't like the way how she just told somebody to go and get the missing couple instead of getting them herself.

2. If you know English and don't understand Chinese. Word of advice: Don't get the tour. We were told that the tour leaders know abit of English. Bullshit.

There was a couple that didn't understand Chinese. Throughout the tour, it was like we were their translators. The tour leader just told us to help her to tell them cause her English wasn't so good. In fact: she didn't understand English. so usually during the whole tour, i feel like they lost out..

Anyway..
We were given 45 minutes to have a quick bite in the Airport. We headed straight for Paris baguette! So yummy! Kevin bought a sandwich and this strawberry yogurt.

At the airport, Don't forget to get the free map that is available in chinese, english, japanese etc. It proved very useful when we went to Seoul later.

So recharged with food, we set off to our destination !

Provence Village (프로방스 마을)

Provence village is known as the Korean version of 'Provence'. We went in winter where it is supposedly the coldest in winter for korea. Temperatures were like -6/-7 when we were there. BRR...
We were told by our tour guide that this place is one of the best for bread or french pastries.
Alas, When we reached there, we were too early! The shops were starting to open at around 10 am plus.
The character of the place is so couple-ly.
It felt very inviting, with many areas where you can take photos with your loved one.

BUT WE TRIED OUR FIRST STREET FOOD!
INTRODUCING :Odeng!

Odeng is basically a kind of thin fish cake. They serve it on a stick (as shown) and would have a sauce slathered on. It comes with soup. Its one of the popular street food in Korea.

AND I CAN SEE WHY.
SHIOKK ONLY. Its like light but flavorful. And when you are super cold and you drink HOT SOUP its like ADDED SHIOKKNESS. Winter makes the soup cool down quite fast though so must eat it fast!!

How to get there:
* Take the bus #200 from Hapjeong, Baekseok, Madu, Daehwa Station (Seoul Subway line 3) >> Get off at Seongdong Intersecion >> 10 - 15min walk (standard taxi fare)

* Take the bus #9709 from Seoul Station (Seoul Subway line 1) >> Get off at Maekgeum-dong >> Transfer to bus #2, #3 >> Get off at Provence Village

 * Take the bus #2200 from Hapjeong station (Seoul Subway line 3, Exit #1, #2) >> Get off at Seongdong Intersection >> 10 - 15min walk (standard taxi fare)

Petite France (쁘띠프랑스)

Tips for future travelling:

When going to any winter countries, its better to stuff your winter coat and gloves in your backpack. Reason being cause of weight and cause when you need a coat you don't need to open your luggage juuuuust to get it.

[Introduction]

The Korean Peninsula is divided between north and south, making Korea one of the only divided countries in the world. The following information is about the Republic of Korea.

Korea has four distinct seasons, each with their own stunning scenes. In the spring, forsythia, cherry blossoms, azaleas and many other flowers are in full bloom; in the summer, vacationers head to the coasts to enjoy time at the beach; autumn brings crimson colors to mountain foliage, and in the winter, land is covered with a blanket of white snow.

The capital of Korea is Seoul, and the government is led by President Park Geun-hye, elected in 2013 as the country’s first woman president.

DAY 1

I've always wanted to go to South Korea, it took several months of planning and we finally reached the day that we flew off to kimchi land. We started planning around July and made contemplated on whether to go F&E or by a Tour Agency. A few of the core places we wanted to visit during our time there was Mount Sorak or Seoraksan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and of course skiing. After, weighing out our options, we realized that maybe going by tour would be a little bit more convenient, since Seoraksan and the ski resort was quite isolated and travelling in a foreign land where English is not widely spoken is daunting (most South Koreans are quite shy when speaking in English, since it's not until recently that English was included in their curriculum).

We went around and checked on prices and found that Chan Brother's was holding a travel fair and decided to check it out. We were then directed to Asia Global Vacation, a sub-division of Chan Brothers Pte Ltd, we were delighted that we finally found an itinerary that fit our needs, Mount Seorak, Ski, and 5 days worth of shopping. Therefore, we gladly signed up and paid our deposit of S$1,000.

Since, we paid our deposit to the day we left for South Korea, there were many screw ups by Asia Global Vacation, which was very disappointing (but maybe I'll leave that for another post). Nevertheless, our vacation in South Korea was fantastic and I will let you know of the places worth visiting and whats not.

We were set to leave at night 10.30pm, so we went down to the bank to activate our card for overseas use and also went to purchase some last minute items for our trip. Check-in was at 8.30pm so we decided to take a cab down to Changi Terminal 2 and went to Changi Recommend's kiosk to buy a KTIS Sim Card for use in Korea (Located at Row 10). After which we waited at Krispy Kreme before collecting our Boarding Pass at the Korean Air counter.

Here's us waiting to board our plane (pardon the grainy picture, since I was using my action camera to take the selfie since it has a wide angle lens on it).

Boarding the plane was quite a breeze and the stewardess of Korean Air provided excellent service and leg room on board Korean Air's 773 was plentiful.

Usually you get 2 choices for your dinner, Beef Bibimpap and Chicken pasta or something? We decided to go for the Bibimpap since we wanted to treat it as a meal to prepare us for Korea and it was great! The entertainment on the other hand was quite disappointing, there was not a lot of variety of shows to watch and some are quite outdated. Well, it is a midnight flight anyway and we can simply sleep for the 6 hour flight.

(A thing about 10.30pm flights, well dinner gets served to you at 12am.)

I'm a big fan of korean food, products and fashion. As all of you may know Innisfree has been in Singapore for a few months already, and the response is great.

Innisfree strives in creating beauty products from the purest jeju ingredients and has a number of famous korean idols backing up their products, like Lee Min Ho and my favorite idol Im Yoona.

Since I'm a guy and no one wants a guy taking selfies with a product, I'm just gonna post the products that innisfree Singapore carries that are affordable and good for people with sensitive skin.

I've gotten these products below for my girl who has quite a sensitive skin problem and needs products that really help her skin.

This is the super volcanic pore clay mask set that is actually on offer by innisfree Singapore. Purchasing the Super volcanic pore clay mask gets you a free cleansing foam and toner. Both produced to help boosts the effects of the volcanic pore clay mask.

This sets you back only SGD 21 extremely affordable and would last you a couple of months with application only needed twice a week.

Next is the innisfree "eye" balm, why "eye"? I honestly have no idea too this product actually acts as a lip balm and eye balm for tired eyes and dark eye circles. You get this 2 in 1 product for the price of SGD 10 ~ 15 dollars. Pardon me as I've forgotten the actual price of this product.

Lastly during my time of purchase of the products, innisfree was having a promotion of spending SGD50 and above entitles you to have a green tea skin care package. Basically samples of their green tea product line.

It comes with a green tea toner, serum, cleanser and lotion. Trust me green tea is actually one of the most beneficial ingredient to the human body.

A simple information on it, did you know that green tea increases your metabolic rate and allows you to burn more calories and therefore lose weight?

Drinking green tea (not those Polka Green tea and etc.) but those that are brewed and if you think it's troublesome you can simply buy those green tea powder that can be found in korean supermarts like the one in Marina Square or Far East Plaza. It would set you back about SGD 10 and would last about 2 months if you drink it daily.

Just shake a little of the powder into the cup and pour in cold drinking water(cold water is harder to process thus increasing your metabolic rate further).

This is just the tip of the ice berg on the beneficial products of green tea, I've even gotten a green tea cleansing foam from innisfree and I love the result of it.

Innisfree Singapore now have stores in Plaza Singapura and Bugis Junction. Try the product out and trust me you will love it.
This place was introduced to me by my girl, located at Golden Mile Complex a place filled with thai restaurants, however this looked like the most popular among the rest.

I eat thai food in moderation, I'm not a huge fan but not a hater either. The thai atmosphere here seems huge with many thai and local people patronizing their store. The price for the place is also quite reasonable and their serving is larger then most thai stores I've been to. Well I've only been to the ones around sunshine plaza =/

Pineapple Fried Rice

This is what I order when I go to most thai restaurants. Why you ask? Well I've always yearn for that sweet, sour and salty taste that comes in this plate of Fried Rice.

However most of the place I've been to does not serve good Pineapple fried rice, most are just bland if not they just taste like plain yellow rice.

Berthai on the other hand struck my taste bud quite pleasantly, although still not to my highest expectation, they served it in such that it is now in my top list in Singapore for Pineapple Fried Rice. Costing you about SGD5 per plate, this is definitely a must try for me.

Dry Beef Noodle

This was ordered by my girl and I had a taste of it and trust me, it's delicious, they served it with thai basil and beansprouts at the side. Therefore allowing you to adjust the intensity of your taste. Although it might not look like much, but the taste alone will fill you up quickly.

Mango Salad

Everyone orders Mango Salad at a thai place right? Berthai's Mango Salad are filled with Mango Slices(obviously), onions, nuts, chillies, shrimps and topped with fried shallots. What more can you ask for and the serving is quite reasonable, however I'm not really keen of the price tag of SGD 4 for a plate for fruit.

Thai Ice Milk Tea

Well this is definitely enough said. Who doesn't order this to drink when it's available.

Berthai is definitely a place to go for a lunch or dinner if you are in the vicinity, but be there early as the place fills up pretty fast. I wouldn't go there just for the food but it's still a must try on my list of cheap and delicious thai restaurants in Singapore.
So we had brunch at a quaint little fusion food shop at Bencoolen, Sunshine Plaza, a place near my former school and it's fantastic.

The decor of the place was quite adorable and they provide an adequate amount of varieties for their menu.

There were not much seats in the shop though and we had to wait for people to finish dining before we could start ordering our food. There were probably only about 6 tables? But still worth the wait, the price of the food were reasonable and costing about SGD 3.50 ~ SGD 5.50.

Honestly, look at the plating of the Smoked Duck with Organic Noodles we ordered, it felt like we were in some high class restaurant.

I'm not a real fan of duck meat but this won me over instantly the noodles are coated with sesame oil and their "special sauce", mixed in a little of their homemade chilli sauce it gave the noodles an extra kick to your tastebud.

As for drinks we had our favourite Thai Iced Milk Tea, I mean who would turn these down.

Just the right thing to gulp down whilst eating the Smoked Duck Noodles. It's a definite must try for me and the price is reasonable, costing only SGD5.50 for the main dish.

The day to travel to batam is finally here, since we had to reach the Harbourfront Ferry Terminal at 7.30am we had to wake up early, we drove there and reached at 7.00am. As the kiasu Singaporean we were we quickly bought a simple breakfast from BreadTalk and went over to wait for our turn to enter the departure hall.

The only reasons I've every been to the Harbourfront Ferry Terminal was cause of going for a Cruise Trips with Super Star Cruise Lines, this is the first time I've ever been on a ferry ride.

------------------------------------------------

Honestly, it was not pleasant , you ask why? Well let me list the differences.

Well for Cruise ships boarding it is extremely easy and orderly, queue lines were formed according to your cabin class (Admiral, Balcony and World Cruiser), as for ferry boarding it was every man for himself and just cut the queue where ever there is an empty slot. Although we were already queuing to board the ferry, when it was time to board people just walked to the front of the queue and just plainly cut through.

------------------------------------------

The ride to Batam from Harbourfront Ferry Terminal took about 45mins to an hour, the ferry we rode on was called the Pacific 7 and it was old, seats were stained but luckily did not stink. My partner got sea sick as the ferry bobbed up and down whilst travelling to Batam, luckily there was a show playing to keep her mind of her seasickness. As for those intending to go on cruises, but are fearful of sea sickness, fret not as you will feel as though you are on land.

 photo Sekupang_Ferry_Terminal_zps60008480.jpg

Shortly after an hour we reached Sekupang Ferry Terminal, luckily we got seats near the exit and we were the first few out of the ferry, we reached at around 8.45am Indonesia Time, but to our dismay we saw a massive crowd awaiting to be cleared and start their tour. Trust me the crowd was ridiculous it took us 20minutes to join the queue cause everyone was cutting in, and it took us another 20minutes to get cleared.

After clearing the Indonesian customs we tried to locate our guide and it took just a matter of seconds, we saw a group of people wearing the Best Batam uniform clad in white and blue, so we went over and the first guy we talked to had our names on his sheet of paper. He told us his name was Henry, and he asked us to pass him our White Card, Ferry Tickets and Tour Voucher along with the 8 dollar departure tax for our trip back tomorrow. Your guide will practically settle everything for you including your hotel stay and ferry back to Singapore (only experience for Best Batam Tours).

Henry told us that we were lucky and we were the first  of our group out of the customs, and most likely we had to wait about 30minutes for the rest of our group to be done with the customs.  We reached at 8.45am got cleared at at 9.25am and finally started our tour at  10.30am(Indonesia Time).

Post in construction, check back for further details.
